Bike the USA Trails

Alaska - Photo © Markham Johnson /BackroadsMy most precious memory is the ride I took amongst the reflections of the multicolored landscapes. I would stop for strawberries or for a bouquet of wild flowers. The path lead to the inn where a fire crackling in the fireplace awaited me.

Wherever you are in the USA, there is a bicycle ride that you should not miss.

Solo Circuits

On flat ground or rugged trails, here is how to prepare for an afternoon excursion or one that lasts a few days.

Wine Country - Photo © Markham Johnson /BackroadsBefore you leave for the USA, study your itineraries by consulting Internet sites specialized in cyclist tours "bike trails".

Canadian Rockies Biking - Photo © Ben Davidson /BackroadsOne of them, Trails.com offers over 15,000 recent and detailed circuits covered on foot, on a bike, on mountain bikes or in a kayak. For each itinerary, the site gives a description of the circuit, the degree of difficulty, the length to cover and sometimes an approximation of the time it takes, a topographical map, the open season, the daily weather forecast and literature concerning these activities. A search engine lets you enter your criteria and returns with a list of circuits that might interest you.
Trails.com covers all of the United States and Canada. Browse through the section operator tours. Their tours might be an inspiration if you decide to organize your own trip.

Once on site, the easiest thing to do is to go to the Tourism Center "Visitor Center" where you will receive information on the best circuits, the level of difficulty and the address of bicycle leasers. If you do not have time to prepare your itinerary before leaving, go to the "public library" where you can do some research on Internet.

Organized Tours

These companies specialize in open air trips and present a magnificent selection of bicycle circuits, multi sport vacations and walking expeditions. Your choice will be guided by the difficulty of the circuit and the type of accommodation you want (luxury hotel, comfortable inn or campsite).

California Biking Experience

Biking along the Monterey coastline (Ref. California For Dummies, 3rd Edition): The Monterey Peninsula's 18-mile Recreation Trail was a brilliant piece of civic planning, a useful and beautiful path for all to enjoy. It ends (or starts, if you like) at Seal Rock past Pebble Beach and wends its way along the coast through Monterey north to Marina. The most traveled section is from Custom House Plaza past Cannery Row, the Aquarium, and onto Lover's Point; however, carry on to Pacific Grove, stop for lunch, and dawdle on the beach on your way back. If you're more than just a recreational cyclist, you may want to carry on through the 17-Mile Drive.
