 Hotel rates vary. If you are willing to make some research, reserve early, open a corporate or frequent guest account, and be flexible on your location and dates, and chase discount coupons, you might find a much better rate or a much better accommodation for the same price.
Always ask for the cancellation policy, avoid non refundable advance reservation, and secure your hotel room with a credit card.
Search the Internet. When you find the right place, call the hotel: Unfriendly staff on the phone will not improve their manners when you will check in. You might learn that the place is under renovation. Make your requests (King bed, non smoking, lower floor, ocean view, parking, etc.).

This is how to find the best available rate for your next hotel stay.
1.
Make reservations in advance and be flexible on your dates
The earlier you make reservation, the best rate you might get.  Generally, hotels offer a limited number of rooms at a deep discounted price. When these rooms are booked, the next price level kicks in.
Rates might change within the hour. When you find the right place, ask for the cancellation policy - avoid non refundable reservation - and secure the room with your credit card.
If your dates are flexible, ask the hotel when their rates are the most affordable. Hotels can be booked on weekends and have availability during the week or the other way around.

Look for discount coupons
You can find discount coupons offered by hotels in a Roomsaver.com or Traveler Discount Guide for example. The coupons can be downloaded and printed online or you can find their paper guide along most interstates and highways.
The coupons are based on availability and must be presented upon check-in in order to take advantage of the discounted rates. The coupons are generally for walk-ins but you can call the hotel and ask if they would accept your coupon for an advance reservation.

Take advantage of special rates
 Hotels are often offering special rates for their privileged clients. You might be one of them.

Hotel Memberships are generally free of charge: Marriott Rewards, Hilton HHonors, Intercontinental PriorityClub, etc. It's worth the effort of subscribing if you are a frequent hotel guest.

 It is easy to find hotel rates on the Internet. Check the hotels websites first. They generally have better rates than hotel discounters. Make sure you read all rates' rules such as a non refundable first night.
